NAIROBI: In a massive embarrassment for the Kenyan Police, a psychopath serial killer, identified as Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, has escaped from his prison cell in Nairobi, Police said on Tuesday.
Khalusha, arrested on charges of murdering and dismembering at least 42 women, breached a wire mesh in their cells and climbed over a perimeter wall. Alongside him, twelve other detainees also managed to break free.
"They escaped last night, 13 in total, including the key suspect in the dump murder case," Kenya police spokesperson Resila Onyango said, as quoted by AFP. The escape was uncovered on Tuesday morning when the officer in charge and the station's canteen manager arrived to serve breakfast to the prisoners.
Kenyan police have reportedly detained eight officers in connection with the escape of 13 individuals, including a suspected serial killer, from police cells in Nairobi. According to Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, the eight individuals involved in the escape, including the station chief, were on duty at the time.
Who Is 'Vampire, Psychopath' Killer Collins Jumaisi Khalusha?
Officials assert that Khalusha admitted to murdering not only the 10 women but also 32 additional victims over a two-year period, with his first victim being his missing wife. After allegedly confessing, Khalusha escaped custody.
He was taken into custody in July and appeared in a Nairobi court on Friday, where the judge decided to extend his detention by an additional 30 days.
His arrest followed the discovery of the bodies of 10 dismembered women found in plastic bags at a dumpsite in an abandoned quarry within a Nairobi slum. The bodies were found amid anti-government protests that began in June, during which numerous Kenyans have been reported missing.
Mohamed Amin, the head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, stated at the time, "We are dealing with a vampire, a psychopath."
