MOSCOW: 22 people were killed in a plane crash in Kamchatka - three crew members of the Vityaz-Aero Mi-8 helicopter and 18 tourists, a source told Izvestia. Rescuers have already found 17 bodies at the crash site, but the search had to be suspended due to darkness. The wreckage of the aircraft that stopped communicating was found at an altitude of 900 meters from the place where the helicopter last signaled. Eyewitnesses told Izvestia that the board went on a flight despite the thick fog. It was because of poor visibility that the helicopter could crash into a hill, experts believe. Those responsible for the tragedy face from seven to 15 years in prison.
A tragic journey
Wreckage of a helicopter that disappeared from radar on Saturday, August 31 was found in Kamchatka. There were 22 people on board — three crew members and 19 tourists. All of them died, a source told Izvestia.
The Mi-8 helicopter of the Vityaz-Aero airline in Kamchatka was heading to the village of Nikolaevka in the Yelizovsky district. The aircraft picked up a group of tourists from the volcano — the path length was about 25 km, the flight was supposed to take several minutes, but communication with the crew was suddenly interrupted.
A day later, the wreckage of the missing helicopter was found at an altitude of 900 meters near the place where the crew of the aircraft last contacted, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia reported. The crash site was discovered by rescuers who flew around the search area.
Previously, it was not possible to locate the ship due to bad weather: there was thick fog and rain in the area of the crash site.
At the same time, the helicopter group was not registered with the Ministry of Emergency Situations. As reported to Izvestia in the department, air routes are already monitored by dispatchers. That is, there was no need to register.
By the evening of September 1, rescuers had found 17 bodies of those killed in the plane crash, the search for the rest was suspended until September 2 due to darkness.
