MOSCOW: Peskov after Trump's words about the dollar: BRICS is not discussing the creation of a new currency. BRICS is discussing the creation of joint investment platforms, the US president needs to clarify the agenda of the association, Peskov said. Earlier, Trump threatened BRICS with 100% duties for replacing the dollar

BRICS members are discussing the creation of new investment platforms, there is no talk of creating a common currency, said the press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov. His words are reported by an RBC correspondent.

Earlier, Trump promised to introduce 100% duties in response to the replacement of the dollar in BRICS. "This is not the first time Trump has made such statements, it is not new. There have been such statements before, even when he was just the elected president. Therefore, now he has essentially repeated his old thesis," Peskov noted.

According to him, the words of President Vladimir Putin, who proposed creating a joint BRICS investment platform, are more significant for Russia. "The thing is that BRICS is not talking about creating a common currency, it has not been and is not. BRICS is talking about creating new joint investment platforms that will allow joint investments in third countries, mutual investments, and so on, that's what we're talking about. Apparently, experts probably just need to explain the BRICS agenda to Mr. Trump in more detail," Peskov concluded.

Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network about US plans to demand that "hostile countries" commit not to create a new BRICS currency or support any other currency as an alternative to the "mighty dollar." "They can go and find another sucker country. There is no chance that BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade or anywhere else," the Republican said. He made a similar statement after winning the US presidential election in November.

In June 2024, the Russian Ministry of Finance announced the development of the BRICS Bridge platform for settlements in national currencies, including digital ones. As Izvestia noted, this could be, for example, the yuan or the rial. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the issue of a single BRICS currency premature. “Our countries have significant differences in their approaches to regulating the balance of payments, national financial markets, and inflation targeting,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in October.
