WASHINGTON: Russia was excluded from the G8 in 2014, but Trump had already proposed to bring Moscow back to this international club during his first term

US President Trump told reporters that Russia's exclusion from the G7 was a mistake and he would like to bring Moscow back to this international club. His words are quoted by Reuters.

Russia was excluded from the G8, which thus became the G7, in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea.

Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Russia's exclusion from the G7 was a mistake and that restoring the G8 format with Russia's participation is in the interests of all participants. "A lot of the things we talk about are about Putin. Let him be with us... and it will be done," he commented on this topic during his first term in 2020.

Back in 2019, the Kremlin noted that Russia's return to the G7 and change of format to the G8 are not an end in themselves. At the same time, the president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov recalled Putin's words that Russia does not refuse to communicate in any format.
