MOSCOW: Medvedev: Scholz's call to introduce a state of emergency over Ukraine is connected with the desire for money

Scholz is seeking to obtain additional funds under the pretext of a tense situation, Medvedev is sure

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev linked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's call to declare a state of emergency over Ukraine with the upcoming Bundestag elections. According to him, such a statement could be an attempt to obtain additional financial resources.

Medvedev believes that the Chancellor's call can be regarded as Germany's hidden reaction to the actions of the US administration. According to him, Scholz's statement is dictated by two main reasons: the desire to obtain additional financial resources under the pretext of a tense situation and the upcoming Bundestag elections.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's desire to introduce a state of emergency in Germany against the backdrop of the latest US statements on Ukraine is connected with the upcoming elections to the Bundestag. The politician wrote about this on his page on the social network VKontakte.

"This alarmist statement by the previously quite calm German "liver sausage" Scholz is dictated by two factors: the desire to knock out money under the flag of resentment at Donald Trump's sharp turn in Europe; the elections to the Bundestag," Medvedev said.

"The disintegrating Ukraine is entirely secondary here," the Russian politician wrote on a social network.

The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council emphasized that in fact the Ukrainian issue is secondary in Scholz's policy.

Scholz earlier said the Bundestag should decide on additional spending on Ukraine from other sources than the national budget as soon as possible because of an urgent budget situation under paragraph 2 of Article 115 of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Germany is the second-largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the United States. Steffen Hebestreit, Scholz’s chief spokesperson, said Germany has provided Kiev with various kinds of assistance worth 44 billion euros since the beginning of the conflict there. According to a 2025 budget agreement, Germany should allocate about 4 billion euros to military support to Ukraine, which is half of what was allocated in 2024. However, the Bundestag is yet to approve the budget.

Recall that Scholz proposed that the Bundestag consider the possibility of declaring a state of emergency in connection with the US statements on the situation in Ukraine. He expressed concern about the actions of the US administration, saying they "threaten the security of Germany and the entire continent."

Scholz called on the parliament to introduce a state of emergency in Germany against the backdrop of the latest US statements on Ukraine. According to the Chancellor, the talks between the head of the White House Donald Trump and the Russian leader Vladimir Putin were not unexpected, but such an event requires a "clear, fast and decisive positioning" of Europe.

On February 12, Putin held a telephone conversation with Trump. The conversation between the two heads of state lasted almost an hour and a half. The Russian and American leaders agreed that the conflict in Ukraine must be ended.

Earlier, Trump broke off ties with the European Union amid negotiations on Ukraine.
