MOSCOW: The meeting of the contact group on military supplies to Ukraine in the "Ramstein" format, which took place on Wednesday in Brussels, was the worst for Kyiv. This was reported at a briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
The diplomat noted that on February 12, another meeting of the contact group on defense support for Ukraine in the "Ramstein" format took place in Brussels, which for the first time was chaired not by the head of the Pentagon, but by the British Defense Secretary. She emphasized that this demonstrates his readiness to take on the role of "chief director" of the Western war with Russia. However, according to her, Western strategists have serious problems. She also added that this change of leadership should be viewed as an element of a chess combination.
It was the first time when the British defense minister led the meeting instead of the Pentagon head.
"As former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Jim Townsend emphasized in an interview with Politico on February 6, Britain can coordinate aid to Ukraine, but there will be no money, and therefore no main aid, he said, without the United States. However, there were such conversations behind the scenes at Rammstein that Wednesday's meeting turned out to be the worst for Ukraine," Zakharova noted.
The diplomat added that if anyone in the West has even a drop of sympathy for Ukraine as a state and for Ukrainians as a people, then they will probably show mercy and will not seek to destroy them. She also emphasized that this is exactly what Zelensky was aiming for, once again turning to Western finances.
The diplomat noted that now only the British have decided to pledge aid.
Zakharova noted that within the framework of Rammstein, only Great Britain decided to allocate $186 million for Ukraine, which is an insignificant amount compared to the more than $3 billion needed monthly to hold the front. She stressed that these funds could be used to build factories, schools and hospitals, as well as to solve communal problems, but the fate of Ukraine was predetermined by the West differently.
Recall that the first meeting of "Ramstein" is taking place in Brussels on February 12. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov reported that the meeting of the contact group discussed the issues of continuing military supplies to Ukraine in 2025, increasing them at the expense of European countries, as well as the development of the Ukrainian defense industry. He noted that a "fair" and sustainable peace will be possible only if the Ukrainian army is strong on the battlefield.
