Trump Vs. Harris: What To Expect From The 2024 Debate & Where To Watch

Published on 9 September 2024 at 10:39

WASHINGTON: As the 2024 election campaign heats up, the spotlight will be on the second general election debate, featuring the first face-off between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Scheduled for September 10, this high-stakes debate promises to be a dramatic clash of contrasting political visions, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Debate Details

Hosted by ABC, the 90-minute debate will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. This event follows a June debate between Trump and incumbent President Joe Biden, who subsequently withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris after facing criticism over his performance and concerns about his age and fitness.

The debate will be held without a live audience or open microphones. Harris's team has expressed concerns about this format, arguing that it will hinder direct, face-to-face interaction and potentially disadvantage her in the debate. The Harris campaign suspects that the muted microphones are designed to limit her ability to engage directly with Trump, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Debate Format and Broadcast

The debate will be broadcast on ABC News at 9 p.m. ET, with two commercial breaks, and will also be available for streaming on ABC News Live, Disney+, Hulu, and Fox News. David Muir and Linsey Davis will anchor the debate, which will be conducted under strict rules. Each candidate will have two minutes to answer questions, two minutes for rebuttals, and one minute for additional comments. Opening statements will not be allowed, and candidates will not be permitted to ask each other questions or use props or pre-written notes.

Trump vs. Harris: Key Dynamics

Trump and Harris have had a contentious relationship, with Trump often targeting Harris on personal grounds. He is likely to focus on her race, immigration policies, taxation, foreign relations, and other contentious issues. Harris, with her background as a former prosecutor and Attorney General of California, is well-equipped to challenge Trump. Her previous experience in high-profile Senate hearings and her performance in the 2020 vice-presidential debate against Mike Pence will likely inform her approach in this debate.

The debate could be a pivotal moment, given that it is Trump's second encounter with a female opponent and Harris's strong prosecutorial background might provide her an advantage in effectively countering Trump's arguments, as per media reports.

Upcoming VP Debate

Looking ahead, on October 1, Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump's running mate, and Tim Walz, Harris's VP pick, will square off in a debate hosted by CBS News in New York City. This will provide further insights into the respective vice-presidential candidates' positions and their ability to support their presidential nominees.

As the debate approaches, all eyes will be on how Trump and Harris navigate this critical platform, shaping their campaigns and influencing the direction of the 2024 election.
