MOSCOW: The Kremlin sees a tense situation in the United States during the election campaign amid reports of a new assassination attempt on presidential candidate, former leader Donald Trump, said Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

"It's hard to say here, it's not really our business, but we, of course, are closely monitoring the information coming from the US, we see how tense the situation is there, including between political competitors, the political struggle is intensifying, a variety of methods are being used. We are closely monitoring this, but we have never interfered in this in any way and we are not interfering now," Peskov told journalists when asked how the assassination attempt on Trump could affect the US elections, whether there is a risk of destabilization of the situation in that country on the eve of the vote.

The shooting occurred on Sunday near a golf club in Florida where Trump was staying. According to law enforcement, Secret Service officers opened fire on the attacker, who was hiding in the bushes. The man escaped and tried to escape in a car, but was detained. An AK-47 assault rifle with a telescopic sight, two backpacks and a GoPro action camera were found at the place where he was spotted. The FBI has joined the investigation, and American authorities regard the incident as an assassination attempt on Trump.

The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5.
