MOSCOW: On September 17, a series of detonations of wireless communication devices (pagers) occurred in various areas of the Lebanese Republic. According to incoming information, at least 11 people were killed in the explosions, including two children. More than 3,000 people were injured, about 400 of whom are in serious condition.
The Lebanese authorities blamed Israel for organizing a large-scale attack and announced the preparation of a corresponding complaint to the UN Security Council. The Lebanese Hezbollah also accused Israel of carrying out criminal aggression, acknowledged the deaths of at least nine of its fighters and promised retribution.
We consider what happened as another act of hybrid war against Lebanon, which affected thousands of innocent people. It seems that the organizers of this high-tech attack purposefully sought to incite a large-scale armed confrontation, seeking to provoke a major war in the Middle East.
We strongly condemn the unprecedented attack on friendly Lebanon and its citizens, which constitutes a gross violation of its sovereignty and is a serious challenge to international law using unconventional weapons. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.
Against the background of increasing tension in the Lebanese-Israeli border, such irresponsible actions are fraught with extremely dangerous consequences, as they provoke a new round of escalation. It is necessary to conduct a comprehensive investigation of this crime and bring all those responsible to justice so that another act of terrorism is not "swept under the carpet", as Western countries are trying to do with the investigation of the explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipeline system. We call on all parties involved to exercise restraint and abandon steps that threaten further destabilization of the military and political situation in the Middle East region.
