MOSCOW: The United States has declared a full-scale war on freedom of speech with restrictions against the Russian media, Moscow regards this as an attack on the profession of a journalist. This is stated in a comment by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, on the occasion of the International Day of Universal Access to Information. The diplomat recalled that on September 4 and 13, Washington imposed sanctions against several Russian media outlets. "In fact, the steps taken by the United States went beyond restrictions as such, and became a declaration by Washington of a full-scale war on freedom of speech as a phenomenon. Under far-fetched pretexts, the United States attacked both the media and personally media professionals, journalists whose personal safety was put at risk," the commentary says.
"We regard such actions by the American administration as an unceremonious attack on the very profession of a journalist, as well as a manifestation of disrespect for human dignity," Zakharova stressed. "It has been fully indicated that the background of the US aggression is a Russophobic, and with a clear nationalist tinge, policy."
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry also drew attention to the fact that on September 26, under the pretext of allegedly damaging national security, access to several Russian information resources was blocked in Moldova. "The Russophobic regime of Maya Sandu, following the example of Western countries, is not the first time blocking access to numerous Russian-language news portals in order to oust Russian-language content and media from the country's information space. Similarly, official Chisinau is trying to deprive its population of information resources in Russian, which is the main means of communication for the vast majority of Moldovan citizens," the commentary says.
