TEL AVIV: The Israel Defense Forces have launched limited ground raids against targets of the Shiite Hezbollah group in the border area of southern Lebanon. This was reported in the Telegram channel of the IDF. Israel has launched a ground invasion of Lebanon — IDF breakthroughs are reported at several sections of the border. Preliminary, Israeli armored vehicles have already crossed the border in the Metula area.

"The IDF has launched limited, localized and targeted ground raids based on accurate intelligence against Hezbollah targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon," the statement said.

The Israeli ministry stressed that these facilities are located in villages close to the border and "pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel." It is noted that the soldiers act in accordance with the methodical plan, which they have been studying and preparing for in recent months.

The IDF ground forces are supported by the air force and artillery.

On September 23, the IDF launched an offensive against the Shiite group Hezbollah, which is based in Lebanon, in order to "pre-empt" it. The operation was called "Arrows of the North".

On September 28, the Israeli Air Force press service announced the elimination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. They noted that he was the main decision-maker and the only one approving strategic and systemic decisions, and sometimes tactical decisions in the organization.

On September 29, the IDF announced that the Israeli Air Force had completed a powerful wave of strikes against Lebanese movement targets. According to the Israeli ministry, about 120 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and in the interior of the country were hit as part of intelligence operations.

On the eve of the IDF ground offensive, the Lebanese army retreated 5 km from the border with Israel.

"These operations were approved and carried out in accordance with the decision of the political echelon. Operation Northern Arrows will continue according to the situational assessment and in parallel to combat in Gaza and in other arenas. The IDF is continuing to operate to achieve the goals of the war and is doing everything necessary to defend the citizens of Israel and return the citizens of northern Israel to their homes," the army pointed out.

On September 23, Israel launched Operation Northern Arrows against the Lebanon-based Hezbollah Shia movement, carrying out massive airstrikes on its military targets. One of the September 27 strikes in Beirut killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The movement confirmed his death and vowed to continue confronting Israel.

Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants staged a surprise attack on Israeli territory from Gaza, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking over 240 hostages, including women, children and the elderly. In response, Israel launched a military operation in the Palestinian enclave to destroy Hamas military and political wings and free all hostages. Hostilities in Gaza continue to this day.

Earlier, the Russian ambassador called on Israel to stop fighting in Lebanon.
